Environmental Stewardship
FPX Nickel began environmental studies for the Baptiste Nickel Project in 2011 to learn more about the project area and inform Project design.
Our approach to implementing robust baseline data collection has been to work with local businesses and First Nation affiliated businesses in a manner that is collaborative and synergistic to ongoing land and water stewardship work. These environmental studies have helped inform our engineering studies to build our understanding of what the Project might look like one day, but there is more we need to learn, and many decisions are still yet to be made. A priority for FPX Nickel is to integrate Indigenous perspectives and knowledge into and guide the environmental baseline programs from the beginning.
Outcome:
FPX has developed a conceptual caribou stewardship plan to support the recovery of the Takla caribou herd. This proposes ongoing monitoring, restoration and reclamation activities working together to support ongoing First Nations initiatives.
Outcome:
FPX has developed a conceptual Fisheries stewardship plan to avoid and protect fish habitat while seeking to support First Nation and local initiatives to restore and enhance fish and fish habitat.
Outcome:
FPX has developed a conceptual whitebark pine stewardship plan to support this rare keystone species that is susceptible to climate change. This includes collection of seeds, nursery trials and early replanting following proven methods.
Outcome:
Development of a closure plan to be applied throughout the mine life to support safe closure and returning land use.
